Things to do in Phoenix : Goldfield Ghost TownArizona boasts a handful of genuine ghost towns, one of which is here in the Valley. Welcome to Goldfield, built in the late 1800s as people moved to the area in response to the discovery of gold in the Superstition Mountains.

Alas, as with all good times, the gold rush ended in the early twentieth century, the people left and the ghost town remained. Situated on the Apache Trail, Goldfield has boasted “paranormal” events almost since inception.

One of the more curious buildings in Goldfield is “The Mystery Shack” in which people “walk at 45 degree angles”, water runs from faucets not connected to any pipes and objects hang from the walls and ceiling at angles that defy gravity.

There’s Goldfield Historic Museum where you can learn about the town and area, including the “Lost Dutchman Mine”, probably the most famous mine the the area (and still not found to this day – queue haunting music).

Visitors can ride the narrow gauge train on the Superstition Railroad, or ride a horse at the Goldfield Stables. There are guided tours of the town, and the Apache Trail, opportunities for gold panning, a chance to visit a Bordello and, of course, see a gunfight or two.

There are also tours of the mine, if you’re brave enough to venture beneath the ground…

The Mammoth Steakhouse and Saloon, which was originally located in Tombstone, serves “the juiciest steaks and coldest drinks you’ll every lay yer hands on”. There are also stores, photograph studios and other merchants to browse and buy from.

Entry to Goldfield is free, but each of the attractions has an entry fee. Information about each, along with the cost, can be found on the Goldfield Ghost Town website (see below). Camp sites and hotels are available nearby.
